STL vs STEP: what's the difference?
Last updated by the stl2step team
STL describes a shape as a list of flat triangles, with no units and no faces; STEP (ISO 10303) describes it as a solid made of exact surfaces (planes, cylinders, cones, spheres, tori and B-splines) joined by edges. STL is for 3D printing and visualization; STEP is for exchanging editable CAD models.
The difference in one table
| STL | STEP | |
|---|---|---|
| What it stores | A list of triangles | A boundary representation (B-Rep): faces on exact surfaces, joined by edges |
| Curved surfaces | Approximated by flat triangles | Exact: cylinders, cones, spheres, tori, NURBS / B-splines |
| Units | None | Declared in the file |
| Standard | De facto format from 3D Systems (1987) | ISO 10303 (AP203, AP214, AP242) |
| Assemblies, colors, metadata | No | Yes |
| Typical use | 3D printing, scanning, visualization | Exchanging CAD models between programs, manufacturing, CNC |
| Editable in CAD | Only as a mesh | Yes, as a solid |
When to use each
Use STL when the part goes to a 3D printer or a mesh tool: slicers want triangles. Use STEP whenever someone has to keep designing, machine or measure the part, or move it between CAD programs: STEP keeps the exact geometry that STL throws away.
Going from STEP to STL is easy. STL to STEP is not.
Every CAD program exports STL from a solid in one click, because it only has to sample the exact surfaces. The reverse loses information: a mesh doesn't say which triangles form a hole or a fillet. Converters that simply wrap each triangle in a face produce a STEP that is still a mesh inside. Getting real faces back means recovering the original surfaces, which is what stl2step's STL to STEP conversion does with AI (97.9% of faces recovered in our benchmark).
Questions
Is STEP better than STL?
For CAD work, yes: STEP stores exact surfaces and solids that can be edited and measured. For 3D printing, STL is enough and is what slicers expect.
Can I convert STL to STEP?
Yes. A plain conversion gives one flat face per triangle; stl2step rebuilds real planes, cylinders, cones, spheres, tori and B-splines instead. The first 3 conversions are free.
What is the difference between STEP and STP?
None. .step and .stp are two extensions for the same ISO 10303 format.
